Event description

Description

Citrus College Open House: English and Math Corequisites in Action,

In Fall 2018, Citrus College became the first community college in California to eliminate remedial English courses, allowing every student to begin their English coursework in a transferable, college-level course, either in a standard section or one with additional corequisite support. Despite this dramatic increase in access, the course success rates remained steady.

That same semester, Citrus College's math department launched a corequisite support model of college statistics open to all students, regardless of their test scores or high school grades. The course enables students to bypass traditional remedial courses and enroll directly in math that counts toward a bachelor’s degree, also known as “transfer-level” math, providing additional corequisite support to help them be successful. This change allowed twice as many students to complete transfer-level math in one year.

You can learn more about Citrus College's programs in CAP's publication, The Capacity Gazette, and you can also visit their campus to see see how they did it.

This Open House will

  • provide you with an opportunity to observe English and math classes in action and learn about the pedagogy used in these classes
  • allow you to ask questions and receive guidance from faculty who are in the classroom every day
