Event description
A Citizen Training on Redistricting aimed at mobilizing our community for the Texas Legislature’s upcoming public input hearings.

About this Event

The League of Women Voters, the Texas Civil Rights Project, and the Fair Maps Texas Coalition invite you to take part in a Citizen Training on Redistricting aimed at mobilizing our community for the Texas Legislature’s upcoming public input hearings.

Texas is beginning the process for the 2021 re-drawing of state and federal legislative districts. Starting in the fall of 2019, the Texas House Redistricting Committee is planning Public Input Hearings for the 2021 redistricting. Hearings are tentatively scheduled for Collin County on Tuesday, January 21, 2020.

Official Committee Hearing Notices can be found here: https://capitol.texas.gov/Committees/MeetingsHouse.aspx

Public comments at the Committee hearings will be used to assist the Legislature when it draws district boundaries. The focus of public testimony is to provide suggestions about improving the redistricting process and information about a region’s unique geographic and demographic characteristics from those residents most familiar with their own neighborhoods. Speaking up about your community is critical to ensuring district lines are drawn to keep your community whole and grouped with nearby communities with similar interests. This ensures that your voice is heard by your elected leaders across all kinds of government decisions.

We will be hosting a Community Training to help community members prepare testimony for the House Redistricting Committee’s hearings. Featured guests include State Representative Ana-Maria Ramos, Dr. Robert Lowry from the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences at UT Dallas, and Elisabeth MacNamara, the former National President of the League of Women Voters.

The event will be broken down into two sections:

10:30-11:30 Panel Discussion on the Census and Redistricting

11:30- 12:30 A citizen training to familiarize community members with the current redistricting process and the criteria used to draw district maps;

If you would like to get a head start on preparing your testimony, please check out the Redistricting Tool Box and Testimony Guides: www.fairmapstexas.org/events
