Description

Cities for Children Forum

One in five Australians is a child, yet the presence children and young people within our cities is often confined to designated parks and play spaces. As important as these are, what of the the streets, shops and squares of our cities? Some argue that the public domain of our cities is becoming more hostile to the presence of younger Australians.

Cities for Children will bring together four speakers with a range of expertise related to the subject, from landscape architecture and urban design to planning and urban policy. Each will bring a distinct perspective on this neglected subject. Together they will respond to the one key question: how can we make space for the young?

Speakers include: Karen Malone, Professor of Sustainability and director of the Centre for Educational Research at Western Sydney University. She is the founder and chair of Child Friendly Cities Asia-Pacific and a UNICEF research fellow on child rights in urban environments. Shea Hatch, a landscape architect at the Fremantle-based practice UDLA. She has recently co-authored a research paper on barriers and motivators for children’s independent outdoor play. Scott Hawken, an urban designer and landscape architect whose work combines smart technologies and analytics with the design of urban landscapes as our cities rapidly develop. Councillor Jess Miller was elected to the City of Sydney Council in 2016, where she is one of the youngest people to hold elected office. Jess is known for her creative and inclusive approaches to sustainability, strategy and innovation.

This half-day forum, brought to you in partnership with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, will take place in the Lendlease Darling Quarter Theatre on the morning of Friday 28 July.
