Event description

Description

On average, every 1000 square metres of vacated office space contains 63 tonnes of material, which for the most part contains a surprisingly small range of products: glass, gyprock, carpet, ceiling tiles and office furniture. As such, it presents a huge opportunity for resource recovery and waste avoidance.

The Sydney-based Better Buildings Partnership’s (BBP) highly successful work has helped to drive down this waste in the commercial property sector, working closely with a group of Australia’s largest commercial property owners. As a result of their dedicated programme, the average resource recovery rate has increased from around 20 to 60 percent over 3 years– massively reducing landfill and creating a valuable stream of products and materials.

This event is intended to introduce attendees to the BBP’s programme – how it came about, what was involved and how it worked in practice. We’ll then open the discussion to think through whether it’s possible to extend the model from the prime end of the Melbourne market all the way down to smaller buildings in regional Victoria.
