Circular Economy-Based Business Opportunities Workshop (Metro Vancouver)

We are pleased to invite you to our circular economy-based 'Business Opportunities' workshop. This event is part of the ongoing Canadian pilot of a National Industrial Symbiosis Program (NISP), aimed at developing smarter ways of bringing resource management solutions and triple bottom line benefits to companies based in the region.

Businesses across all sectors and sizes in 30 other countries worldwide have benefitted from the NISP model. It is now your region’s turn to take advantage of this proven approach to benefitting business.

The workshop aims to:

● Find ways of turning parties’ wastes into other parties’ valued resource inputs

● Help participants reduce waste management costs

● Generate new business opportunities

● Increase the size and diversity of participants’ business networks

● Identify means of improving environmental performance

● Expand the regional circular economy

Who Should Attend?

This workshop welcomes small, medium and large enterprises from any sector. In particular, the program benefits businesses with tangible resource flows (such as, but not limited to, manufacturing, farming, energy generation, vehicle maintenance, construction / demolition / deconstruction, food and beverage processing, film and theatre production, research labs, and trucking / logistics and more). Please note that the deeper the operational knowledge of your delegate, the greater the chances you will uncover symbiosis opportunities.

As well, the best workshop results are achieved when businesses having resource and waste management challenges attend. A few spaces will be allotted to service providers; however, space is limited, and priority will be given to businesses producing/requiring materials or resources .

What Happens at a NISP Workshop?

A typical workshop agenda consists of:

● A networking breakfast, during which participants will meet their designated facilitators, and locate their seat assignments.

● Welcoming remarks, a keynote speaker, and an overview of how the round table format will work.

● A coffee break to enable further networking.

● About 1-1/2 to 2 hours of idea generation and resource matching, during which each table details their respective resource Haves and Wants, and subsequently has a chance to review the resources tallied at the other workshop tables.

● A recap of the day’s achievements, including the number of resources examined, and the number of potential resource matches (“synergies”) made.

● A light lunch to enable additional networking and to launch the process of workshop follow-ups.

What Happens after the Workshop?

Within a week of the conclusion of a workshop, participants receive three reports:

● A 1-page summary of the workshop highlights.

● The contact information for all the other participants.

● A detailed report outlining the resource “Haves” and “Wants” discovered during the workshop, tailored to each participants’ expressions of interest. This report will summarize which workshop attendees are interested in what specific resources the participant in question offered up for consideration during the workshop. This detailed report also outlines those attendees able to potentially provide to that participant specific resources that piqued their interest during the workshop.

NISP Canada has obtained funding from all three levels of government to institute an industrial symbiosis pilot. These funds mean that the NISP Canada team will be able to facilitate post-workshop follow-ups AT NO COST. NISP practitioners will work with workshop participants to assist in moving forward those potential partnerships – or “synergies” – identified at the workshop.

In addition, these NISP practitioners will run analyses to find matches that may have been missed at the actual workshop. They also constantly look for new matches with businesses attending other workshops. That is, once an organization’s resource Haves and Wants are entered into the proprietary “SYNERGIe” model, they are able to be matched with “Haves” and “Wants” from both earlier and later workshops, vastly increasing the possibility of generating more business opportunities.

Note, too, that only those possible synergies that participating businesses choose to pursue will be implemented.
