Event description

Description

For three years, this unique community gathering held in New York City in June, commemorates the lives and work of the African descendant - LGBTQA/SGL youth, elders, ancestors, and allies. All too frequently African descendant-LGBTQA/SGL persons are denied celebration, honor, and inclusion, within a variety of settings due to the marginalizing shadow of race, class, and gender divides. The Circle of Life Celebration and Pride Memorial addresses this by being a respectful and inclusive celebration that highlights how these lives have enriched us individually and collectively. Our mission is to honor the ever-moving circle of life and the ever-growing work before us that both require the creation of sacred spaces of celebration and reverence for our community during Pride in June in NYC. Our 4th Annual Circle of Life Celebration and Pride Memorial will feature performances, speakers, beautiful remembrances, a unique Elder Commissioning and The Circle of Life Celebration Awards. Honorees for 2017 will be:

Ally Support – Deborah Levine (Executive Director of Love Heals: The Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education) and Josef Sorett (Associate Professor of Religion and African-American Studies at Columbia University)

Ancestral Award – Regina Shavers (Founder of Griot Circle in Brooklyn, NY) and Stephen Maglott (Author/Publisher of the Ubuntu Photography Project)

Community Worker/Organizer – Mo’ George (Housing Justice Worker and Executive Director of Picture The Homeless)

Public Service Official - C. Virginia Fields (CEO, National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS) and Eric Adams (Brooklyn Borough President)

Persons of Trans Experience Salute – Marsha P. Johnson & Sylvia Rivera (Transpersons' Rights Activists) and Jevon Martin (Founder/CEO of Princess Janae’s Place)

Special Circle of Life Celebration Acknowledgement – Dorrell Clark (Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance Honors), Kim Ford (LGBTQ & Women’s Community Activist), Michael Rustin (Harlem United)
