Event description
Amelia Hugill-Fontanel considers the work of Cipe Pineles, an innovative art director of midcentury magazines.

About this Event

Our third Standing-Room Only Lecture will have Amelia Hugill-Fontanel driving in from the “Young Lion of the West” (aka Rochester, NY) to speak about a designer who’d climbed to the top of the profession by the mid-20th century—yet most of us don’t quite remember her. Is that because Cipe Pineles was a woman? She might have said so, after rising to become art director of Charm, Glamour, and Seventeen, but waiting for ten years to be allowed to join the New York Art Directors Club. This talk will trace the extraordinary arc of Cipe’s career through images from her design archive at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Amelia Hugill-Fontanel is associate curator at the Cary Graphic Arts Collection at Rochester Institute of Technology—a renowned library on printing history. She is an art historian and editor who contributes to publications about Cary Collection holdings, including those about graphic design, calligraphy, wood type, and typefounding. As manager of the technology collection, she is responsible for teaching and maintaining some twenty-three different presses and several hundred fonts of metal and wood type.

Our Standing-Room Only Lectures aim to present short talks about graphic design, typography, and collecting. The lectures are kept to about twenty minutes because—true to its name—the series takes place in our standing-room only gallery. So, wear comfortable shoes and bring a short attention span.

Doors open at 6p for pre-talk mingling.
