You Can’t Take It With You (1938) 126 mins

Frank Capra

Jimmy Stewart, Lionel Barrymore

"Never take life seriously,” says Grandpa Vanderhof in this delightful Frank Capra film. “No one's lived through it yet." Grandpa Vanderhof, a very convincing man, has talked a banker into becoming a toymaker. The Vanderhof household includes a daughter who writes unpublished plays, a son-in-law experimenting with firecrackers in the basement, and a granddaughter who is an aspiring ballerina and whosehusband is a virtuoso – on the xylophone. Add a suitor hoping to marry Vanderhof’s relatively sane granddaughter, his stuffy and wealthy parents, and you have a funny and satisfying clash of cultures.

The Mechanics' Institute Library and Chess Room is an historic membership library, cultural event center, and chess club located in the Financial District of San Francisco, California at 57 Post Street. Founded in 1854 to serve the vocational needs of out-of-work gold miners, the Institute today is a favorite of avid readers, writers, downtown employees, students, film lovers, chess players, and the 21st century nomadic worker who needs a quiet place to plug in a laptop and do research.
