Join us, Wednesday February 26 as we welcome ACE Eddie nominated editor David Turner, and assistant editors Shireen Hinkley and Amy Reynolds Reed. David edited the highly acclaimed documentary, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound. Directed by veteran Hollywood sound editor Midge Costin, Making Waves reveals the hidden power of sound in cinema, introduces us to the unsung heroes who create it, and features insights from legendary directors with whom they collaborate.

Also, we welcome award winning filmmaker Gabriel Cowan, developer of the brand new, soon to ship, Audio Design Desk. Audio Design Desk is a Digital Audio Workstation you play like an instrument. It turns your QWERTY keyboard into a Smart Sampler, so Hits, Rises, Footsteps, Punches, Gunshots, or whatever you’d like can be performed in real-time, while watching your video.

Also Mary Poplin from Boris FX returns to show and tell about the brand new 2020 releases and Boris FX's newest Award Winning acquisition, Silhouette. Hear what's new in Mocha, Particle Illusion, and parameter tracking in Sapphire and Continuum.

Join Gurus Michael Kammes, Patrick Southern and TBA as they will attempt to answer all of your questions and solve all of your problems concerning Resolve and FCPX, Avid, Premiere Pro and anything else you can think of. If they can't solve your problem or answer your question, then you go home with a problem, but you still got out of the house, so that's not a bad thing.

About Mary Poplin
Mary Poplin is an accomplished visual effects artist and the product specialist for popular plug-in developer, Boris FX. An experienced trainer and post-production artist, Mary has worked on major Hollywood feature films such as The Last Airbender, Gulliver's Travels, and Jackass 3D. As a Boris FX Senior Product Specialist, Mary consults with film studios and customers all over the world to provide hands on training to help evangelize the power of Mocha planar tracking and the Boris Continuum, Silhouette and Sapphire plug-in packages. She continues to hone her skills as a VFX artist on real world projects and specializes in match moving, paint, beauty work, and matte painting

About Gabriel Cowan
Gabriel Cowan is a Sundance and IFP fellow as well as an award winning filmmaker who has produced over 20 feature films. Over a dozen of Cowan’s movies have premiered at major festivals including Cheap Thrills which won the audience award at South By Southwest and They Call Us Monsters which won the 2017 Independent Lens Award. Cowan’s films have been called “nothing short of iconic” by the Los Angeles Times and “Powerful and Eye Opening” by the Hollywood Reporter. Cowan has worked with Marisa Tomei, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver, Frank Grillo, John Liguizamo, Dane Cook, Courteney Cox, Seann William Scott, Kate Walsh, and many others. As a musician Gabe is a multi platinum recording artist and played with Jackson Browne, Robbie Robertson, Ry Cooder, the Tower Of Power and others. He serves on the boards of Inside OutWriters, an organization that endeavors to heal trauma through writing classes to kids in juvenile hall and Common Sense Media, an organization with Eighty Five Million subscribers which promotes better digital citizenship for our children.

ACE Eddie nominated editor David Turner, and assistant editors Shireen Hinkley and Amy Reynolds Reed join us for a behind the scenes look and the workflow of this highly acclaimed documentary, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound. Directed by veteran Hollywood sound editor Midge Costin, Making Waves reveals the hidden power of sound in cinema, introduces us to the unsung heroes who create it, and features insights from legendary directors with whom they collaborate. An exploration of the history and emotional power of cinema sound, as revealed by legendary sound designers and visionary directors, via interviews, clips from movies, and a look at their actual process of creation and discovery. It is available for streaming and to buy on iTunes, Feb 11.


About David J Turner
David J. Turner is an ACE Eddie-nominated film editor, a Cinema Audio Society-winning sound mixer, and a 23 time Telly Award-winning documentary director.
He began his filmmaking journey in 2004, traveling around the world as a Minneapolis-based NGO documentarian for 4 years - helping raise over $3 million for crisis response domestically and internationally, and garnering 23 Telly Awards for his documentaries.
He went on to earn an MFA in Film Production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 2011, and discovered a passion for film editing and sound design that led him to teach sound editing & re-recording mixing at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, and picture editing at the Los Angeles Film Studies Center.
In 2013, he worked as a sound editor and Foley mixer on Fruitvale Station - the directorial debut of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, and the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award-winning film

About Amy Reynolds Reed
Amy Reynolds Reed is a sound designer, editor, and re-recording mixer. She was an Assistant Editor and Associate Producer on "Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound." Recently, she worked on documentaries “Feminists: What Were They Thinking?”, “Pioneers in Skirts”, and virtual reality documentary “Another Dream.” She teaches Sound Design and Re-Recording Mixing at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. She has also started to enjoy distance running.

About Shireen Hinkley
Shireen Hinckley is a founding member of Somewhere Films, a female filmmaking collective, and a seasoned editor and AE. In addition to her feature documentary work, she has created awareness campaigns for non-profits like The Nature Conservancy and Great Public Schools Now, as well as international organizations focussing on the refugee crisis.
