CINECON TURNS 55! RARE AND RESTORED FILMS RETURN TO THE BIG SCREEN AT HOLLYWOOD’S EGYPTIAN THEATER OVER LABOR DAY WEEKEND!

About this Event

For more than half a century Cinephiles have gathered over Labor Day Weekend to celebrate the movies at the annual Cinecon Classic Film Festival. Cinecon is where archivists, authors, collectors and film fans come together for five days of classic film screenings, special programs, celebrity guests, and the best movie memorabilia show in the nation. Now celebrating its 55th year, Cinecon is dedicated to showcasing unusual films that are rarely given public screenings.

The festival will take place over Labor Day Weekend in the heart of Hollywood from August 29th through Sept. 2nd, 2019. Loews Hollywood Hotel is the host hotel with all screenings taking place at the historic Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Blvd. Cinecon 55 is presented in partnership with Hollywood Heritage, the renowned museum and preservation organization.

On Thursday, August 29th, the festival will open in grand style with a gala reception in the forecourt of the Egyptian Theatre followed by a special screening of BARE KNEES (1928) courtesy of the Library of Congress. The silent film, which captures the Jazz Age to a “T”, centers around a young "flapper" who causes a scandal in a small town with her bobbed hair and short skirts! The Famous Players Orchestra under the leadership of Scott Lasky will provide live musical accompaniment for this rarely seen gem.

Cinecon will be honoring three legendary actresses over the weekend (schedules permitting). First up on Friday, August 30th will be beautiful Ann Robinson, who is probably best known for her starring role in WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953). She will be presented with the Cinecon Legacy Award after a screening of the fast-paced thriller, THE GLASS WALL (1953), which also stars Vittorio Gassman and Gloria Grahame.

Next on Saturday, August 31st, the stylish and graceful star, Barbara Rush will make a rare public appearance. She will be presented with the Cinecon Legacy Award after a screening of the Technicolor Cinemascope comedy, OH, MEN!, OH, WOMEN! (1957) which also features Dan Dailey, Ginger Rogers, David Niven and Tony Randall.

Finally, on Sunday, September 1st, pert and lovely Gigi Perreau will round out the celebrity-filled weekend. Ms. Perreau, who began as a child star has parlayed her talents into a busy career over the past several decades. She will be presented with the Cinecon Legacy Award following a screening of FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE (1950) which co-stars Clifton Webb, Joan Bennett, Robert Cummings and Edmund Gwenn.

The popular SATURDAY NITRATE FEVER program returns this year with an all-new slate of Nitrate film treasures. Also returning is a third iteration of KINECON AT CINECON. This year's edition of the annual tribute to the days of live television features archival footage of Jack Benny, Ernie Kovacs, Steve Allen, a salute to kid's shows, game shows and recently discovered footage of Nat 'King' Cole.

Cinecon will be paying tribute to Ron Hutchinson, the co-founder of THE VITAPHONE PROJECT, who passed away earlier in the year. Hutchinson had both discovered and assisted in the restoration of literally hundreds of early talkies, both shorts and features. While his main focus was on Vitaphone shorts, he was an enthusiastic and helpful supporter of countless other preservation projects. His family will be joining us for a package of some of his favorites.

This year’s SPECIAL PROGRAMS will include a presentation by celebrated author Will Friedwald whose forthcoming book focuses on the life and career of musician Nat “King” Cole. Music historian Mark Cantor will return with another fascinating compilation of jazz and swing clips from the golden age. And David Sonne, who continues to support Cinecon via his role as trustee of the Jack Oakie & Victoria Horne Oakie Charitable Foundation, will be hosting a tribute to the legendary comedian.

Cinecon 55 will also include a movie memorabilia show at Loews Hollywood Hotel located at 1755 N. Highland Avenue in Hollywood, around the corner from the Egyptian Theater. Attendees may purchase rare movie stills, posters, lobby cards and other film-related collectibles in our dealer’s rooms and have books signed at our author's tables.

Full Festival Passes are available at the pre-registration price of $199 until July 31st. After that they will go up to $249. So it's best to purchase them early. We will also be offering Day Passes from $50-$60 (depending on the day). Day passes will be available for purchase online beginning August 1st. All announced titles are subject to change and are pending final film clearances. Please visit our website at http://www.cinecon.org for film titles, schedule updates, hotel information and more!
