How do you conduct collaborative work more effectively with groups on projects? In this 3-day long course, individuals will receive hands-on practice with team activities to help them start, advance, and wrap up projects of any shape and size.

Today’s teams want more alignment among their members, better decision-making processes, and a greater sense of ownership over their work. In this course, you’ll learn the essentials for forming and norming cross-functional project teams, as well as how to navigate specific activities that capture the strengths of each individual from start to finish.

In this course, you will spend most of each day moving between brief mini-lectures and hands-on activities in a variety of team configurations.

At the start of the workshop, you’ll learn practical rituals for finding a common purpose at the beginning of a project. From there, you’ll get a chance to work on teams and practice how to get unstuck when your team needs to move forward. On the third day, you’ll learn best practices for how to wrap things up and move on to new teams. And along the way, we’ll give you tips for how to facilitate team activities in a variety of contexts.

By the end of this course, you’ll have plenty of practice in both practical and tactical collaboration skills, as well as a new toolkit of activities you can use with your teams.

This course draws from material in our book Turning People into Teams: Rituals and Routines That Redesign How We Work.

You will gain experience with:

  • the importance of taking a team-based approach to design work
  • how teams are best formed, normed, and perform over the course of a project
  • how your personal perspectives and bias factor into team decisions and performance
  • forming and working with teams on a variety of short projects
  • adaptive learning techniques such as timeboxing to improve overall team performance
  • how to form and apply criteria to improve the quality of group decision making
  • your overall communication and collaboration skills

This course is ideal for...

  • designers or individual contributors with professional experience, seeking to improve how they participate on cross-functional teams.
  • professionals asked to lead team activities, who may not be comfortable doing so (yet).
  • new team leaders, seeking to improve how they support a team from start to finish of projects. This includes those who work in project, product, or program management, as well as design and engineering.

To get the most out of this course, we strongly recommend that all course participants are currently working with cross-functional teams in the workplace.

Day 2: Stuck in the Middle

Understanding Bias, Identifying and Working with Assumptions, Creating Problem Statements, Brainstorming Methods

Day 3: Sprinting Towards the Finish

Decision-Making with Criteria and Confidence Voting, Retrospectives

Instructors

David and Mary Sherwin are co-founders of Ask The Sherwins, LLC, a consulting and training firm that helps design organizations develop the capabilities they need for better product design and stronger cross-functional teamwork. They have recently coached product and service design teams and provided training around innovation best practices for organizations such as Philips Oral Healthcare, Tipping Point Community, The Purpose Project, Google UX Community and Culture, and Eventbrite. The Sherwins are also active in the design education space; they lead workshops in the CIID’s Summer School, and currently teach in the MFA Collaborative Design program at PNCA. In their spare time, David and Mary have collaborated on three books, including their most recent Turning People Into Teams.

Cancellation and refund policy

  • Cancellations must be made in writing by email to education@ciid.dk. If you are unable to attend, a substitute delegate is welcome at no extra charge. Please provide the name and title of the substitute delegate at least 3 working days before the first day of the programme.
  • A full refund minus 10% administrative charge will be made for cancellation received 2 weeks (10 days) before the course. No refund will be made for cancellation after that.
  • “No shows” during event days are not considered cancellations. In this instance payment will not be returned.
