Description

Michael Stangel

Growing up in Geelong Victoria, Australia, Michael began his musical career playing in local bands, at festivals and school events. Michael quickly progressed into more professional bands in his early teens and was earning more money than his teachers from his music by the time he was sixteen. This mix of artist and entrepreneur would become a common theme throughout Michael's career.

At the age of nineteen, Michael received his first real opportunity overseas when he signed a deal with a European label based out of Spain. Michael moved to Europe to begin working with his new label, however, after only a few minor successes, Michael decided to return home to focus on his songwriting and production skills.

In 2001 Michael teamed up with successful producer and friend, Paul Wiltshire, to work on projects for Major labels Universal and Sony. During this period Michael met ARIA and Grammy award winning producer, David Nicholas who had collaborated with the likes of The Pretenders, INXS, Elton John, Brian Adams and Local icons Cold Chisel and Richard Clapton. Michael and David soon became a writing and production team called Jellyfish. Michael and David would go on to write and produce songs in that period for artists like The Veronicas, Shannon Noll, Dean Geyer and the Androids.

In 2005 Michael produced, recorded and mixed an album for Australian Band, Borne. Who rose to Number 14 on the USA Billboard charts with their Album Loss of Signal. Michael became a mainstay writer and producer for Universal, Sony, EMI and Warner Brothers.

In 2011 during a local performance, Michael experienced a small seizure, which he thought nothing of at the time. However, it turned out to be much more severe than first thought Michael was told he had a tumour lodged in his heart valve and would need to have emergency surgery to remove it or risk imminent death.

The tumour, although rare was not thought to be an issue moving forward Michael soon returned to normal life until double vision and stroke--‐like symptoms revealed multiple brain tumours in his Brain, that were considered to be aggressive melanoma tumours. Michael was told to get his affairs in order and that he may only have three to four months to live. After living with this reality, it was discovered that the tumours in Michaels' brain were fragments of his heart tumour, although this gave some relief the prognosis was still grim. This was a very rare situation with only 20 medical record incidences of this in medical history with an equally bleak outlook. Michael went on to endure some brain operations to remove tumours.

During this time a friend suggested he try out for the Voice as a distraction from the activities. With much persuasion from his family, Michael decided to try out and became a member of Team Delta only to lose the battles and be saved by all the remaining coaches, Ricky Martin, Seal and Joel Madden. Michael ultimately joined team Madden and quickly developed a kinship with the LA rocker. Michael ended up making top 3 and received adulation for his attitude towards life. Joel would go on to tell the nation that "Michael you represent Australia well, You're a fighter and a good man, the kind of man I would like to think I am to my family."

Michael's Success on the voice was amazing and afforded him many opportunities since. However, Michael's battles were not over yet as he suffered another seizure only weeks after finishing The Voice that resulted in an Aneurysm. That required further surgery. Michaels fighting spirit saw him singing the national anthem three weeks after leaving a hospital in front of forty thousand people at the EJ Whitten AFL Legends Game that year. Michael’s health is under continued review with regular scans. Fortunately, the Tumour have stopped growing, Michael is in complete remission and is expected to stay well.

Since 2013 Michael has enjoyed good health and has been very busy as a performer, Public speaker and songwriter. Michael has been keen to give back to the supporting community that embraced him during his darkest hours, working for charities and foundations including Cure Cancer, EJ Whitten Foundation, Kids Plus, Olivia Newton--‐John Wellness Centre, Peace of Mind MS Limited organisation to name only a few.

From the beginning of 2017, Michael has been back in full flight and involved in a vast array of exciting projects, that range from managing artists, advising record labels, teaching vocals, session musician, producer er, songwriter and performing his shows. The list of artists that Michael has worked with this year alone includes Merril Bainbridge, Nathaniel Weillimse, Harrison Craig Pauly Fenech (Housos) Libbi Steel, Matt Taylor (Chain), Mike Rudd (Spectrum) The second half of 2017 is looking just as busy
