Chuck Close Portrait Drawing Workshop
Saturday, March 23, 2013 from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM (PDT)
"Drawing in the Grid: The Chuck Close Portrait"
Students in this workshop will learn about the use of the grid to copy photographs using drawing materials. We will also learn about using value in drawings. Value refers to the range of shades of gray that, together, make a believable textured, seemingly three-dimensional image. We will copy black and white photographs onto drawing paper using drawing techniques developed by the artist Chuck Close. Please bring one or more
(approximately 8.5" x 11") black and white photographic portrait prints. Do not bring original photographs, instead bring scans, photocopies or digital copies. Self portraits or portraits of friends and family are encouraged. All of the Chuck Close portraits are of his family, friends or himself.
Artist and arts educator Margaret Niven has taught workshops and classes in the Monterey Bay area for 30 years. She is on the faculty at Monterey Peninsula College where she teaches drawing, painting and design classes. Each semester her beginning drawing students complete an assignment based on the portrait work of Chuck Close. Margaret's own work in painting, drawing and printmaking is inspired by the textures and patterns of the natural world. She maintains a studio at the Tannery Arts Center in Santa Cruz. www.margaretniven.com
