Description

The Sunrise Theatre goes twisting into the 21st Century when Chubby Checker arrives with his special guest, Mary Wilson. Chubby’s seminal recording of The Twist climbed to No. 1 on two separate occasions (in 1960 and again in ’62). The Twist spawned a massive dance craze and thrust Chubby Checker into the national spotlight. In addition, each new song brought a new dance involving "dancing apart to the beat" such as The Jerk, The Hully Gully, The Boogaloo and The Shake.

"The Twist" was not only the #1 song but it introduced the concept of "dancing apart to the beat". Over the next few years, endless songs incorporating "The Twist" into its name sprang up such as "Peppermint Twist", "Twist and Shout" and "Twistin' the Night Away". In addition, each new song brought a new dance involving "dancing apart to the beat" such as "The Jerk", "The Hully Gully", "The Boogaloo" and "The Shake". At the forefront was Chubby with "The Fly", "The Pony" and "The Hucklebuck".

The next few years were prolific for Chubby as hit followed hit. In 1961, Chubby recorded "Pony Time" written by Don Covay and John Berry. It went to #1 and stayed on the charts for 16 weeks. In between recording and touring, Chubby took time to add feature films to his portfolio with the releases of "Don't Knock The Twist" and "Twist Around The Clock". Checker is the only recording artist to place five albums in the Top 12 all at once.

It was a vision of musical stardom as a Detroit teen that inspired Mary Wilson, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, to found one of the most successful female singing groups in recording history – The Supremes. Four decades and 40 albums later, what once started as a dream has exceeded beyond Wilson’s wildest imagination. With an unprecedented 12 number-one hits, including five in a row – Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, Stop, In The Name Of Love, and Back in My Arms Again – The Supremes set the precedent for super group success. Since then, Wilson has written a best-selling autobiography, performed on stage and screen, lectured and toured the world, and continues to be looked up to as a singer who set the standard for females in the recording industry.
