Event Details

to honor

Christopher M. Collora,

Chris is a native Long Islander. He grew up in the Babylon/West Islip area and was always fascinated by local history.

Chris got his start in historical research and photography as Troop Historian for his Boy Scout Troop #179 in West Islip. He later rose to the rank of Eagle Scout and become a very active volunteer in his community.

A 2002 graduate of the New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury NY, Chris studied Broadcast Journalism and was inspired by an award winning LI News Tonight series he created about Gold Coast Mansions of the NorthShore. This inspired him to get more involved with the historic preservation group Gold Coast Mansions Historic Long Island.

Chris is an award winning print and broadcast reporter and has launched his own website longislandonlinenews.com as well as working with the Babylon Beacon and several Patch.com sites acrossLong Island.

In creating Long Island Historic Houses of theSouthShore, Chris learned a great deal about the local history from Massapequa to Mastic and all the homes that have been knocked down and lost to history. Over 25 historical societies and organizations across the South Shore contributed to the book. Although ambitious in its coverage area, the book chronicles many of the magnificent mansions and historic homes that once stood along the South Shore but were never glamorized like the North Shore Gold Cost.

Chris hopes his work will inspire more people to learn about their local history and preserve the historic structures which remain standing for future generations to appreciate.
