About the Program

For her thirtieth holiday concert as VOICES Music Director, Dr. Lyn Ransom has chosen classic works as well as holiday favorites. The program will include “Carol of the Bells,” “Patapan,” Mendelssohn’s “There shall a star from Jacob come forth,” and a medley of carols arranged by Westminster Choir College Professor Dr. R. Doug Helvering. Sotto Voce, VOICES’ chamber ensemble, will sing joyful excerpts from Bach’s Christmas Cantata 142 “Uns ist ein Kind geboren.” Joining VOICES Chorale and the Sotto Voce chamber ensemble will be favorite performer Dr. Rochelle Ellis, soprano, and young singers from the Trenton Children’s Chorus.

When discussing the program, Dr. Ransom says, “The pieces in this concert have special meaning for me. “Carol of the Bells” and “Patapan” are performed by choruses throughout the world. I first heard them as a high school student in Martinsville, Indiana, and they instilled a life-long love for choral music in me. The excerpts VOICES will sing from Mendelssohn’s Christus also hold a special place for me. I remember Joseph Flummerfelt’s inspired conducting of this piece at Westminster Choir College my first Christmas here in Princeton in 1985, just a few years before I started VOICES. The trio for men’s voices is especially resonant and beautiful, as are the melodies in the familiar chorus, ‘There shall a star from Jacob come forth.’ The Mozart Magnificat is a new piece for everyone and the singers have tackled the intricacies with relish. Christmas spirituals include ‘Sweet Little Jesus Boy,’ performed by Rochelle Ellis,  ‘Betelehemu,’ and ‘Go Tell it on the Mountain.’ I love all the music in the program, and I hope audiences will, too!” To learn more about the program, please visit the VOICES website.

Westminster Choir College Professor Dr. R. Douglas Helvering’s A Festival for Christmas, was written in 2006, and is based on several Christmas carols. The first two, “Personent Hodie” and “Of the Father’s Love Begotten,” are less familiar and sound refreshing in Helvering’s interesting arrangements. “O Holy Night” features the men of the choir, and the last carol, “Joy to the World,” will include all performers and the audience.
