Courses for Christian Life Institute – May 14–16, 2019

Faith and Film: A Trio of Movies Through Spiritual Eyes

Facilitator: Riley Temple

Spiritual themes are often found in popular films. You just have to look for God at the movies. We will focus on three recent films that participants should see before attending the class: The Hate U Give; If Beale Street Could Talk; and Green Book. Come join a lively discussion about how Christian themes and spirituality show up in these secular movies.

Introducing … The Book of Acts

Facilitator: Rev. Emmett Dunn

Acts, classified as the only historical book in the New Testament, forms an indispensable link between the ministry of Jesus and the establishment of the early church. It paints a picture of a church that was born in oppression and struggled through persecution, yet have survived throughout the ages. Learn how the church grew from a small band of disciples into a community that has spread throughout the world. The Books of Acts bears witness to the lives of ordinary people doing extraordinary things under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Purpose-Centered Living

Facilitator: Rev. Yvonne Hawkins

Want to know your life purpose? This course presents theological perspectives of life purpose and why it is essential for spiritual well-beingness. Reflections and discussions particularly focus on the importance of life purpose in the African-American community and how life purpose supports the flourishing of Black faith. By the end of the three-day course, students will be able to: identify four key biblical texts that offer theological understandings of life purpose; create a personal, working definition of life purpose; identify sources of life purpose for their own lives; and identify at least one next-best step to walk in the direction of their life purpose. Participants are requested to complete a short survey prior to the first class at https://www.psychologies.co.uk/test-whats-your-true-passion.

Forgiveness, Reconciliation and Healing: Pressing Through Pain

Facilitator: Rev. Danielle Bridgeforth

We have all been hurt and disappointed. The question is not will we experience pain, but how will we deal with pain when it comes. In this class, we will wrestle with the question posed by Jesus to the paralyzed man in John 5:6: “Do you want to get well?” Healing does not look the same for everyone, but, in most cases, healing starts with forgiveness and deciding to press through our pain.

The Progressive Church: Where Do We Go From Here?

Facilitator: Rev. Brandon Harris

Alfred Street has been blessed with great preaching, teaching and leadership over the years. We now have a national and international platform and a reputation as a progressive church that not only talks the talk but walks the walk. We sow beyond the walls of ASBC. We stand up for social justice. And we believe in equity among men and women in the pulpit and in church leadership. While we have been given much, much is expected of us and churches like us. This class examines what we are to do with the power and platform that God has given us, and what can we do stretch ourselves and bring God glory.
