About this event

Choosing a PhD Program & an Advisor

(ACS California & AWIS East Bay Joint Virtual Event)

The decision to do a PhD is exciting, but can be overwhelming. Much appears to be at stake in where to attend and—more importantly—whom to choose as an advisor. In this seminar and discussion, Prof. Lipomi from UC San Diego will offer his thoughts on selecting a PhD program and an advisor who will give you the best chance of flourishing personally, professionally, and scientifically.

About Speaker:

Darren J. Lipomi earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minor in physics as a Beckman Scholar at Boston University in 2005. He earned his PhD in chemistry at Harvard University in 2010, with Prof. George M. Whitesides, where he was supported by a fellowship from the ACS Organic Division.

From 2010 – 2012, he was an Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Prof. Zhenan Bao at Stanford University. He is now a Professor in the Department of NanoEngineering and Program in Chemical Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. His research interests include the chemistry of organic materials, especially the mechanical properties of pi-conjugated polymers for flexible solar cells, biomechanical sensors, and phenomena that occur at the intersection of materials chemistry with human perception and cognition.

He is the recipient of the NSF BRIGE award, the AFOSR Young Investigator Program award, the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. He hosts a podcast, “Molecular Podcasting with Darren Lipomi” and associated YouTube channel (Darren_Lipomi) that together have nearly 10,000 subscribers. These venues serve as a resource to students, postdocs, and other early-career researchers. His research website is lipomigroup.org.

This event is FREE and Open to All! Donations to AWIS East bay is encouraged.

  • The California Section of the American Chemical Society promotes chemistry and the chemical profession in the Northern California area:  We provide programs and services for members, recognize and assist educators and students, and host public outreach events to convey the importance of chemistry in today’s rapidly changing technological society.
  • East Bay AWIS (ebAWIS) is a local chapter of the national Association of Women in Science (AWIS) advocacy organization championing the interests of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) across all disciplines and employment sectors. AWIS strives to ensure that women in STEM can achieve their full potential by breaking down barriers and creating opportunities. We envision a day when women will participate fully in STEM as manifested through equal opportunity, pay equity, and recognition.
