Event description
Come taste the savory side of cacao with Authors Amber and Jake Royer

About this Event

Join the Chocolate Maker of Pike Place Market, indi chocolate, and authors Amber and Jake Royer for an evening of fun, prizes and tasting the savory side chocolate.

During the event, you will be able to taste samples from the Cooking With Chocolate Cookbook that include:

  • Cocoa Butter Phylo Cups – With Indi Chocolate’s Spice Rub Cheese Filling
  • Dark Chocolate Mushroom Arancini
  • Cocoa Nib Meatballs

Along with cacao based tea from indi chocolate.

Both authors will sign copies of their books:

Cooking with Chocolate -- There are Herbs in my Chocolate started as a demo project for an event at the Royers' local herb society. The book features both sweet and savory chocolate recipes that coax out chocolate’s diverse flavor profiles and match them with culinary herbs. Chocolate can be earthy, bitter, nutty, subtle or sweet. Jake Royer will talk about how to cook with everything from nibs and cocoa butter to chocolate-infused balsamic vinegar. He will also discuss his newest venture, The Office Plant Cacao Project, where he is growing cacao from seed to pod indoors.

Chocolate Space Opera -- Amber Royer writes the Chocoverse comic space opera series. It supposes a future where the aliens have landed and taken samples of commodities. Now, the galaxy can grow its own coffee, its own sugar cane, its own cinnamon. But they missed chocolate – which becomes Earth’s only unique resource. And there’s about to be a war over it. In Book 3, Fake Chocolate (available April 14), Earth’s cacao trees are in danger and the alien invasion is looming. Amber will read a sneak-preview passage from Fake Chocolate, and will talk about how the real history of both chocolate and coffee influenced the book.

Speaker Bios:

Amber Royer is a science fiction author whose work often veers into culinary territory. The protagonist of her Chocoverse series is a culinary arts student in a world where chocolate is the galaxy’s most sought-after delicacy. The first book in the series, Free Chocolate, received favorable reviews from Publisher’s Weekly and the Barnes and Noble SFF Blog. Royer maintains an author Instagram feed that focuses on tea, coffee, chocolate and writing prompts. She has started making it a point to visit local tea and coffee shops when she visits a new city, which has given her the opportunity to speak with small business owners and industry professionals. She has taught creative writing and nonfiction writing classes at UT Arlington for over a decade. One of her more popular classes is always Writing Your Own Cookbook: From Heirloom to Fundraiser.

Jake Royer is a Civil Engineering Designer by day and an urban gardener by weekend. His Office Plant Cacao Project is about documenting growth of cacao trees in an indoor environment. He began his love of chocolate at an early age and although his taste for fine chocolate has been developed by sampling single-source chocolates at the Dallas Chocolate Festival and spectacular chocolate creations he has encountered along the way, he still harbors a not so secret love of Oreos. He has always been interested in how things work and loves to take food back a step from the finished product to the raw materials. Why buy yogurt (or herbal syrup or glace fruit) when you can make it even better. He is also the pastry chef of the family and the one with green thumbs. He has been gardening for over 20 years and has had a semi-regular blog.
