Organizer

Arc Northland

The Arc in Minnesota was formed in 1946 as one of the first and most prominent organizations to advocate for the rights of children with developmental disabilities.  Prior to that time, very little thought was given to the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities and most were taken out of homes and institutionalized, becoming wards of the state.

The mission of Arc Northland continues today to “promote and protect the human rights of people with disabilities and their families, while actively supporting full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetime.”  We do this through education, advocacy and by providing support services to all persons with disabilities.

Throughout the years, the Arc has remained solid in its movement and mission and much progress has been made.  Statistically, one in every five individuals has some type of disability that adversely affects certain life areas.  Minnesota continues with serious health inequities as the need for services for individuals with disabilities far exceeds the availability or adequate supply of services.  With that, adverse outcomes and quality of life is hindered greatly for many.

Today, Arc Northland continues to lead the charge to progress into a healthier and more integrated society for all.  We at the Arc Northland look to a brighter future consisting of increased community, partnership, and member engagement; a broader scope and supply of advocacy services; increased engagement and successful collaborating between parents and school personnel tackling the hard issues surrounding IEP and 504 student plans; and more education and training for such needed programs as Fetal Alcohol Sydndrome awareness and prevention.  The need for creating more partnerships and awareness continues.

We are looking to you for solutions and supports as we seek partners who care for their family members and friends.  Please join us on this mission towards a more equitable, healthy, and balanced future for individuals with disabilities and all.
