Event description

Description

The Chinese toekang potret (photographers) were involved in both commissioned photography and the production of commercial images. Contrary to the belief that their clients were from the lower strata of society, this talk will show that they were commissioned by the European, Chinese and Javanese elite.

Join Ms Liesbeth Ouwehand as she examines the position of Chinese photographers in the colonial visual landscape.

About the Speaker
Liesbeth Ouwehand is the curator in charge of the photographic collection of South and Southeast Asia in the Leiden University Libraries.
