Event description

Description

A rippling 60-foot dragon will parade through Hillsboro Village and lion dancers will cavort as part of the entertainment in a Chinese New Year Celebration taking place noon-3 pm, Saturday, Feb., 10, 2018.

Both the lion and dragon are symbols of good luck, fortune, strength and power in the Chinese culture. “We bring joy and blessings to our community in the tradition of the Chinese New Year, and we invite everyone to join us!” said Jen-Jen Lin, director of the Chinese Arts Alliance of Nashville.

The nonprofit arts organization is the driving force behind the event in which schools, neighborhoods and others are partnering. A choir of students and the public will open the program at Corner Park with a popular Chinese New Year Song called 恭喜Gong Xi (pronounced “gong-see”). Gong Xi means congratulations and it’s said to congratulate one another for making it to another year and to wish each other good luck for the coming one. It’s a sing-along with the music available!

In addition to the lion dance and dragon dance, "Playing by Air," a professional juggling performing group, Public Library's Puppet Truck, Nashville Chinese School's Chinese yo you club, MLK high school Chinese Language class students, Vanderbilt Kungfu Club and more will join us for the celebration. There will be Chinese food from Lucky Bamboo, the Best Chinese restaurant voted by Nashville Scene as well as other food trucks will join the Food corner of the event.

If you have program and would like to present, please contact us no later than Jan 15, 2018.

The Celebration is at Vanderbilt University’s Corner Park between 21st Ave. S., and Blakemore Ave., thanks to the Community, Neighborhood and Government Relations Department, Vanderbilt University for their sponsorship!

Come in Chinese costumes or outfits. Red is the lucky color especially for the Chinese New Year!

This event is free and open to the public, and all ages are welcome. Cold won’t deter our effort, but ice road will. In case of rain and light snow, we will move our venue to Vanerbilt Recreation Center (2700 Children's Way, Nashville)
