Event description

STORIES and LESSONS of my entrepreneurial journey into China is where your journey begins! Discover what's beneath the glamour of China's megacities. Understand the undercurrents of repression, the mentality of nationalism, the pursuit of the "China dream" and all the implications these sentiments have for strategy, risk mitigation, and success for doing business in China.

I started traveling regularly to China for business since 2004, but it was only after becoming a resident of Shanghai (2012 - 2017), first as an EXPAT, then as a CONSULTANT, and finally as an ENTREPRENEUR, that I was able to connect all the evolving dots of China's rise and continuous evolution as the next economic, cultural, and military superpower.

I learned valuable LESSONS at every cross-cultural interaction throughout this 5-year journey, marketing to Chinese consumers, leveraging Chinese social media, partnering with local Chinese, understanding the real implications of Chinese GUANXI relationships, the cultural context of corruption, and gaining explicit insights into the Chinese business mindset to better empathize with contrasting values and negotiate with opposing views.

You can study Chinese culture, become a China news watcher, and even learn to speak Mandarin Chinese; but there is nothing more impactful for your greater "contextual" understanding than to IMMERSE yourself in STORIES about real business successes and failures in the mysterious and complex Middle Kingdom.

About a "Mindset for China Business"

"HARD results" in China are always achieved via "SOFT skills"

Gene Hsu, Founder of EME Career Consultants and OC China Business Forum, will discuss the highlights of a "Mindset for China Business" course that he continues to develop based on 20+ years of experience in Greater China. Gene has taught this course to MBA, EMBA, and IMBA students in the US and China since 2007.

As China continues to evolve at light-speed, the relevant contents are continually updated as well. Gene just relocated back to the US in April 2017 after living in Shanghai for the past 5 years.

About this Meetup group

OC China Business Forum aims to increase awareness of culture, language, and business exchange between China/Chinese and the US/Westerners with a SPECIAL EMPHASIS on "soft skills" related to improving cross-cultural communications.
