Description

Hike Rating: Moderate; 2.8 miles round trip

Guide: Marilynne Keyser (mtkeyser@gmail.com; 541-923-0558)

This four hour hike will focus on native plants, including early summer wildflowers. The well-maintained trail takes us from the banks of the Crooked River to the geological marvel called Chimney Rock on the canyon rim. We will go slowly and stop often to examine the native wildflowers we encounter and enjoy the incredible vistas along the rim. This hike will start at the Chimney Rock trailhead located across the road from the Chimney Rock Campground on the Crooked River below Bowman Dam. Please be at the trailhead ready to start the hike at 10:00 am. Bring your Guide to Native Plants of the Deschutes Canyon Area. Guide books will be available for purchase before the hike ($10/FANs of the Deschutes Canyon Area members; or S12/non-members, payable with cash or check). A plant checklist will be provided.

Bring a lunch to enjoy along the way. Please wear good closed-toe hiking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. Bring plenty of water and your hiking poles if you use them.

Group size is limited to 8 people, and dogs are not allowed on this hike. If you sign up and later need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible so that people on the wait list can be invited to join this hike. Thank you!

Turn left on Highway 27 and follow it north to the campground. It should take only 45 minutes to drive from Bend.

This event is sponsored by Friends and Neighbors of the Deschutes Canyon Area (FANs), a group founded in 2011 by landowners surrounding the Deschutes Canyon-Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area in Central Oregon who came together over their shared love of nearby public lands. The focus area of FANs includes many special places such as Steelhead Falls, Alder Springs, the Peninsula, Otter Bench and Scout Camp. Become a member by visiting our website at www.fansofdeschutes.org. Memberships are just $10 per person per year.
