Event description
This hike will focus on native plants, including wildflowers, and we will hike slowly and stop often to examine native plants along the way.

About this event

Hike Rating: Moderate; 4 miles

Guide: Marilynne Keyser (541-923-0558)

This four hour hike will focus on native plants, including early summer wildflowers.  The well-maintained trail takes us from the banks of the Crooked River to the geological marvel called Chimney Rock on the canyon rim. We will go slowly and stop often to examine the native wildflowers we encounter and enjoy the incredible vistas along the rim.  We will be hiking through several native plant communities, including the talus slope and the lithosol on the canyon rim. After eating lunch, we will hike back down the trail and explore the riparian zone in the campground. Bring your Guide to Native Plants of the Deschutes Canyon Area. Guide books will be available for purchase before the hike ($10/FANs members; S12/non-members, payable with cash or check). A plant checklist will be provided.

This hike will start at the Chimney Rock trailhead located across the road from the Chimney Rock Campground on the Crooked River below Bowman Dam.  Please be at the trailhead ready to start the hike at 8:00 a.m.

Wear good closed-toe hiking shoes. Bring an extra layer of clothing, sunscreen, water and your lunch.  Bring your hiking poles if you use them. Bring a face mask to wear in case physical spacing requires that we wear masks at times.

Group size is limited to 8 people (including guides), and pets are not allowed on this hike. If you sign up and later need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible so that people on the wait list can be invited to join this hike. Thank you!
