Event description

Description

The annual Children's Summer Fete, in collaboration with special guests from the world of heritage including Benjamin Franklin House, Leighton House Museum, Dr Johnson's House, the Ragged School Museum and the William Morris Society at Kelmscott House, will offer the following wonderful activities for families:

Benjamin Franklin was always thinking of ways to make life easier. Join the team from Benjamin Franklin House to see how one of his inventions, bifocal glasses, helped him see close up and far away with the same pair of glasses! Experiment with lenses to see how they work then design your own pair of glasses to take home.

Enjoy a fun-filled day in the magical garden at Leighton House and create some drawings of your own based on Lord Leighton’s own designs and some of the plants you’ll find in the garden!

With Dr Johnson’s House, find out more about Dr Samuel Johnson, the writer and wit who lived and worked in London in the middle of the 18th century, compiling the first modern dictionary of the English language in 1755. Learn more about some of the curious items in our handling collection; browse through one of Johnson’s dictionaries; and dress-up like a Georgian lady or gentleman. You might even learn a new word or two!

With Kelmscott House, learn how William Morris used to weave carpets. Try it yourself using our colourful materials and make your own paper weaving masterpiece. Find out more about William Morris and his family, and all the beautiful things they made, inspired by nature.

Meet the Learning Team from the Ragged School Museum and create your own Victorian Classroom Kit! Have a go at Victorian handwriting, create your own slate board and optical toy (to play with under the desk), and of course it wouldn’t be complete without the Dunce’s hat!

The Fete will be held in the lovely gardens of Leighton House Museum so bring a picnic!

Please note that entry to the Museum is not included in a ticket to the Summer Fete. For more information on visiting Leighton House itself, please visit their website here.

Advanced booking is not required but will help us to plan accordingly. Thank you!
