Event description

Description

We are offering a course of four coached development sessions for riders aged 8-12.

The sessions will run on four Saturday mornings between 10am and 11am on the following dates: April 29, May 13, 20, 27 (Please note there is no session on May 6).

The cost of all four sessions is £20. Children who are entitled to free school meals can attend for £10. Please reserve a place using this Eventbrite form and pay for the sessions in cash at the first session on April 29.

These sessions provide a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and aim to improve bike handling skills. Sessions will be led by British Cycling-qualified cycling coach Heidi Blunden and will take place on our traffic-free track and paths.

They will use structured games and activities to help young riders develop key skills and techniques such as efficient pedalling, braking, gears and co-ordination on the bike as well as giving children the opportunity to cycle with new friends!

Coaching sessions will require parents/carers to complete a consent form in advance. Please send a completed copy by April 27 to cyclingcentre@bristol.gov.uk. Helmets are compulsory. (Note that children who attended Heidi's coaching sessions in February/March will not need to complete a new consent form).

These sessions are an ideal follow-on from Bikeability courses (though it is not obligatory to complete any Bikeability courses if your child is a competent rider).

FAQs

Does my child need to be able to ride a bike?

Yes! These sessions are for children who can already ride a bike and have good basic bike handling skills. If they want some additional practice they can attend the drop-in sessions at the Cycling Centre and/or do the Bikeability Level 1 course. More details on the Cycling Centre website.

Are there age requirements to enter the event?

The sessions are designed for children aged 8-12. (We hope to offer more sessions for older and younger children in the future). If your child is under eight or has a younger sibling they are welcome to attend the drop-in learn to ride session that takes place at the Cycling Centre at the same time. If they can already ride they can cycle around our traffic-free tracks.

Do I need to stay with my child?

You are welcome to, but do not have to. Our coach has a current DBS and Bristol Family Cycling Centre staff will also be on site.

Will these sessions turn my child into the next Lizzie Deignan or Mark Cavendish?

We can't guarantee it! The emphasis of the coaching is on learning bike handling and cycle sports skills in a fun way - but these are skills that will provide a solid foundation if your child wants to progress in any cycle sport discipline, whether for fun or competition.

What can children expect?

This is the second set of sessions that Heidi has run at the Family Cycling Centre. Here is some of the feedback we received after the first set: "My child has thoroughly enjoyed this course and I've really enjoyed watching his confidence and biking skills grow. I really hope you run more sessions!"; "The people are really nice and my daughter truly enjoyed the course."; "Heidi provided excellent sessions, covering lots of skills, group work and interesting activities. She had brilliant control of the group and encouraged all the riders to do their best. Looking forward to seeing more of these types of activities/sessions."; "The course was perfect for my daughter, who at age 8 was one of the younger ones. Using the track and practising in a group has really improved her bike skills. Thank you!".

What bike does my child need?

They don't need any special type of bike, although it must have front and back brakes and ideally gears so riders can participate in all activities. Helmets are compulsory. Good-quality children's bikes can be hired from the centre for an additional £2 per bike per weekly session and we can provide helmets free of charge for the session if your child needs one. If you would like to use one of our bikes please notify us in advance so that we can reserve one for you (subject to availability).

What if my child cannot attend all of the sessions?

We appreciate that not all children will be able to attend all four sessions. However, to keep prices low for everyone we can't offer a discount for missed sessions.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the session?

If you are driving you can park in the car park next to Action Indoor Sports. The Cycling Centre can be found at the bottom right hand corner of the car park. You are, of course, welcome to cycle. If you are planning to hire one of our bikes and want to arrive by bus, then routes pass within 10 minutes' walk of the Cycling Centre. You can check routes on the Travel West website.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please send us an email at cyclingcentre@bristol.gov.uk or call us on 01275 832800.
