Children & Youth vs. the Climate Crisis - where do we go from here?
Event Information
About this Event
During COP25, governments and youth activists united for a historic moment to sign the first-ever Intergovernmental Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action, supported by the COP25 Presidency, YOUNGO, UNICEF, David Boyd- UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Environment on behalf of the Children’s Environmental Rights Initiative, Michelle Bachelet- UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and H.E Mary Robinson on behalf of The Elders.
The Declaration, based on priorities identified by YOUNGO and inputs from children and youth across the world, is the first of its kind commitment to accelerate inclusive, child and youth-centered climate policies and action at national and global levels.
It is signed by 12 governments and reflects the passion and energy of the youth movement, which continues to demand more ambitious action, and that their voices be heard.
This special event will:
- Highlight the commitments that States have made to advance children's rights in climate policy and action through the Intergovernmental Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action
- Explore how these commitments can be taken forward at national level and through COP26 - by States, young people and other actors - including some examples of best practice
- Share practical resources and tools that can help to implement child- and youth-centred climate action
Speakers include:
- Sharon Ikeazor, The Honourable Minister of State for Environment in Nigeria (TBC)
- Dr. David Boyd, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment
- Licypriya Kangujam, Climate and Environmental Activist and Founder of The Child Movement
- Sara Cognuck González, Co-founder of the Network of Youth and Climate Change of Costa Rica
