Ensuring the safety and well-being of children is a vital responsibility across healthcare, education, and social care settings. This specialised CPD session is designed to equip BSL interpreters and communication professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to interpret safeguarding discussions accurately and sensitively.

Led by a Senior Nurse Lecturer with expertise in Health Visiting, this session will explore different types of child maltreatment, recognising signs of abuse, and the role of multiagency teams in safeguarding children. Gain confidence in navigating safeguarding terminology and procedures, ensuring clear and effective communication between professionals, families, and support services.


Learning Outcomes

  • Understand Types of Child Maltreatment – Gain in-depth knowledge of different types of abuse, including recognition, response, and appropriate actions when concerns arise.
  • Enhance Safeguarding Terminology – Familiarise yourself with key terminology used in safeguarding and child protection to ensure accurate and effective interpretation.
  • Navigate Multiagency Collaboration – Learn how professionals in healthcare, education, and social care work together to safeguard children, including procedures for looked-after children.
  • Improve Accuracy in Safeguarding Communication – Develop confidence in interpreting safeguarding discussions, ensuring clear and precise communication between professionals and families.


About the Trainer

Katie is a qualified Nurse, Health Visitor and Advanced Clinical Practitioner with over a decade of Nursing experience. Most of her clinical experience has been in a community health setting and she is passionate about all aspects of public and family health. Katie has experience of managing acute and chronic health conditions in primary care and working as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in the wider community helping support the most vulnerable and frail by reducing hospital admissions and supporting facilitated discharge from hospital.


Katie moved into higher education at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2022, where she is now a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing. She teaches across the nursing programmes, specialising in public health, leadership, management, and healthcare innovation. Katie has a Postgraduate certificate in teaching in higher education, is an independent prescriber, and has been awarded the title of Queens Nurse for her work within the wider community.
