Event description

Description

Poverty damages lives and can have devastating long-term effects. Yet today, 30% of children in the UK are now born into poverty. In East Kilbride, in 2015, one council ward had 1 in 4 children living in poverty, three wards had 1 in 5, and only one had less than 1 in 10.

But child poverty is not inevitable and many individuals and groups locally and nationally work to combat it every day. However, as child poverty is growing, we must ask ourselves – What else can be done? What else can we do as individuals and groups?

Join Darren McGarvey, author of Poverty Safari (1), and the Poverty Alliance and the Get Heard project (2), to discuss child poverty and what more can be done to address it. Meet other groups working on child poverty locally, discuss opportunities to work together and explore new action to make a difference.

The event is open to all and all about promoting debate about what works, sharing and working together. There are 30 or so organisations working in the field of poverty reduction just in East Kilbride and all are invited. The event is organised by the South Lanarkshire branch of the Scottish Greens. It will be an inclusive event, and welcoming to all, with the aim of promoting discussion and coming up with new solutions to address child poverty locally. This is a free event with refreshments available for a small donation.
