Presenter Profile: Cris Rowan

Cris Rowan is a pediatric occupational therapist, biologist, author of “Virtual Child” and prolific speaker who is passionate about changing the ways in which children use technology. Cris’ concept Balanced Technology Management urges more engagement in 4 critical factors for development and learning: movement, touch, human connection and nature. Citing over 300 research studies showing technology’s detrimental impact on children in four domains – physical, mental, social, and cognitive, Cris poses the question “Are the ways in which we are raising and educating children with technology sustainable”? Cris is CEO of Zone’in Programs Inc. offering workshops, programs, training and consultation services to parents, health professionals, educators, governments, and technology corporations, promoting a balance between healthy activities and technology. She has BSc’s in both occupational therapy and bilogy frum University of British Columbia, and recently authored her ground-breaking book “Virtual Child”. Cris has two children ages 38 and 24 and resides on the Sunshine Coast in BC, Canada.

While enjoying the lovely setting and meal and connecting with others, there will also be an opportunity to meet with an island licensing officer. Take advantage of the chance to connect in an informal setting, and bring your questions for the licensing officers!

Get to Know the Licensing Officers:

Kristina Royds: I have been a Child Care Licensing Officer with Island Health since September 2018. I came to the job with a background in Early Childhood Education having worked in a variety of programs over my career, including Infant Toddler care, Preschool, Group Child Care and Nature Based programs. I have Bachelor in Applied Child Studies from Mount Royal University and a diploma in Early Childhood Education/Infant Toddler Education from Vancouver Island University. As well, I am a CPRA Canadian Certified Playground Inspector.

Candy Anderberg: I have been a Licensing Officer with Island Health since November 2017. Prior to coming to Community Care Facilities Licensing I managed a Group Child Care facility for seven years and spent another 10 years being an educator. I have a Bachelor of Education, a Bachelor of Arts, an Early Childhood Educator certificate and am a certified CPRA Canadian Certified Playground Inspector. I believe in life-long learning, that begins in childhood in a healthy and safe environment.

Conference Details

The conference is a joint project of the Child Care Resource and Referral programs on Vancouver Island. This includes PacificCARE CCRR, Cowichan Valley CCRR, Sooke and West Shore CCRR and the Victoria CCRR. The conference is being organized by the Regional Coordinator for CCRRs on Vancouver Island, Catherine Carter Clark.


The fee is $55 per person. Lunch/refreshments and door prizes are included in the conference fee. If you have questions about the conference or venue, call Catherine at 250-746-4135 ext. 237 or email


Please check with Catherine if you are unsure of your registration status. There is no refund if you do not attend the conference for any reason. If you are given a seat at the conference and are unable to make it but are able to find someone in your place to attend that is acceptable but please notify Catherine with the name of person who will be coming instead (whether you register on Eventbrite or through mail).*

* Please wear layers to ensure your personal comfort level at the conference.

* We are unable to accommodate special dietary restrictions for food, but will have some Gluten Free and vegetarian options available.

* On-site parking is available at the Crown Isle Resort.

* A certificate of attendance for 6 hours of professional development (1 hour networking lunch) given out at the end of the day

Refunds for cancelling registration before October 11, 2019 are subject to a $15 administrative fee. No refund after October 11, 2019. You must contact Catherine directly if cancelling registration regardless if registering by mail or through Eventbrite.*
