Description

Presenter

Alan Collins is a partner at Hugh James Solicitors and is based at their London office. He is a specialist in complex personal injury and clinical negligence cases including child abuse cases in UK, and abroad. He has successfully represented clients in high profile litigation such as the Jersey "Haut de la Garenne" case, and has represented clients in the Stuart Hall, Max Clifford, and Jimmy Savile cases (all three being described as disgraced celebrities). He has also successfully acted for clients in particularly complex sexual abuse cases for example Green Fields House which was a home for "maladjusted" boys in the 1960’s. Alan is currently acting for victims in high profile grooming cases.

Abstract

Child abuse is a dominant societal issue which has presented challenges for lawmakers, and lawyers. In recent years there has been major legislative reform both in Australia and the UK, and as a result of the recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse with more to come. Alan Collins will explain how child abuse litigation has been a vehicle for pushing the boundaries on liability and limitation, and will examine the complex legal issues and arguments that continue to dominate cases that arise from child abuse.
