Description

You’re Invited

Join us for the keynote conference in a year honoring the dramatic events that gave rise to Chicano/a Studies at UC Santa Barbara, and to the transformative contributions of Chicano/a and Latinx students, staff and faculty to the intellectual life of the University over the following 50 years. The conference will commemorate the 50thanniversary of El Plan de Santa Barbara on the 22-23 of February, with a weekend of expert panel discussions, receptions, and performances. Through this yearlong commemoration, we aspire to catalyze collective efforts in the coming 50 years, to continue building a more equitable, diverse and inclusive University, and to complete the ambitious agenda that the architects of El Plan left for future generations.

About the Department of Chicana/o Studies

New Knowledge, Changing Worlds

The Department of Chicana/o Studies is a venue for the interdisciplinary and multi-method study of social justice within Chicana/o/x, Latina/o/x and Indigenous cultures, communities and experiences. The Department was created to critically educate members of society, including leaders in education, in the law and public policy, and in social and environmental justice non-profit organizations. Over the past fifty years, students have become advocates for their communities, aided by their education in Chicana/o Studies, and now they have the option of pursuing doctoral degrees. The Department of Chicana/o Studies was the first in the nation to create such a doctorate and continues to lead the field with faculty producing innovative research and new Ph.D.s entering the professoriate.
