Event description

Description

Chicago Tribune Freedom Center

Freedom Center is the massive plant where the Chicago Tribune—and many other newspapers—are printed and assembled. Until it opened in 1981, the newspaper was produced in the basement of Tribune Tower. The site was selected so paper could be delivered by barge, but the river proved to be too shallow. Enormous 1-ton rolls of paper are brought in by train and truck and stacked high in a cavernous warehouse. The rolls feed 10 enormous offset web printing presses, where rubber blankets put ink to paper at blazing speeds. Inserting machines are then used to assemble the finished newspaper—with hundreds of distinct pieces targeted to different customers—for delivery.
