Event Details

Please join the Institute of Politics as we explore Chicago's status as a sanctuary city. For the past 10 months the Trump administration has been trying to withhold federal dollars from “sanctuary cities” to no avail, and the debate between these cities and the federal government is far from settled. So, what is a sanctuary city and what does it mean for Chicago to be one? What is the relationship between the Trump administration and sanctuary cities when it comes to policing and caring for undocumented people? And what does the future hold for sanctuary cities?

Our discussion will feature Anna Valencia, the City Clerk of Chicago, and Laura Mendoza, an immigrant organizer and advocate for the Resurrection Project, a Chicago non-profit serving Chicago’s immigrant community.

This event is part of the "Chicago Style" series, in which the Institute of Politics invites a prominent elected official, policymaker, political operative, journalist, lobbyist or organizer to our historic home on South Woodlawn for an informal conversation about their life in politics and the issues of importance to them today. The format is simple: Our invited speaker begins the conversation with 10 to 15 minutes of remarks—and then opens the floor to questions. The goal is to give students a rare, inside glimpse into the political process and the lives of people in public service. The conversations are always off the record, and they're always accompanied by a delicious meal from a Chicago restaurant.
