Chicago River Day 2019

Site Captain: Charlie Portis, founder and owner of Wateriders
Adam Chernoff, General Manager of Wateriders
Ian Rose, Director of Aquatics, East Bank Club

Join your neighbors, friends, and fellow river stewards for Friends of the Chicago River’s largest volunteer event of the year, Chicago River Day. This year Friends is celebrating 40 years of bringing the river to life and invites you to show your support for a healthier river by volunteering! Together, throughout the 156 miles of watershed, everyday heroes will improve river habitat by collecting harmful and ugly litter. Some sites will also do additional stewardship activities like trail building, mulching and removing invasive species.

The Chicago River system is home to over 70 species of fish and provides critical habitat for millions of birds and butterflies during migration. It's the river that brought explorers and tradesmen to create our great city. It's also a place to relax and have fun! Let's show our respect and join together to take care of this amazing natural resource. Volunteers receive a Chicago River Day T-shirt as a special thank you gift!

At this location Wateriders is providing kayaks to participants to help us clean the banks! They are professionals and will outfit you with personal floatation devices, give you an introduction and safety talk. To facilitate availability of boats, we are asking people to sign up for a time slot. Please show up 10 minutes prior to your assigned time, so the staff can begin orientation promptly! THIS IS CONSIDERED AN ON THE WATER LOCATION.

Please register so we can ensure we send enough bags, gloves and T-shirts for each location. Be sure to wear closed toed shoes, work clothes that can get dirty, and bring a full water bottle. Registration for all Chicago River Day sites is open until Sunday, May 5, 2019 or until the site is at capacity.

Help spread the word! Share this event on social media and use the hashtag #ChicagoRiverDay.
