Description

Chicago River Day 2018

Beaubien Woods

Site Captain: Robb Telfer, Field Museum

This cleanup site is captained by the Field Museum and hosted by the Forest Preserves of Cook County.

Please join us for Chicago River Day 2018 at Beaubien Woods!

The Little Calumet River is a part of the Chicago River watershed and a great place to explore. Volunteers are needed to collect garbage on land and on the water. Please wear closed-toed shoes and work clothes that can get dirty and wet. Volunteers receive a Chicago River Day T-shirt as a special thank you gift! Refreshments will be provided.

This year we are focusing on the Monarch Butterfly to connect our work to the ecosystem we are improving. Read some cool facts about the monarch here.

If you are interested in picking up litter from a canoe (it's free!) CLICK HERE to sign up.

About this site:

Beaubien Woods, part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County, sits along the Little Calumet River and next to the Altgeld Gardens community. This site is one of eight sites where the Centennial Volunteers program is building a community of stewards to help bring back the native habitat. If you enjoy restoration work, look into the Centennial Volunteers program and continue to help improve river habitat year-round!

The Forest Preserves recently received funding from the Chicago Community Trust to implement a planning and programming initiative at Beaubien Woods, as part of the broader Our Great Rivers vision. After the site cleanup, all participants are welcome to attend a public open house to share their visions for the Beaubien Woods! Location TBD.

This cleanup day site and visioning work are happening in partnership with the Forest Preserves of Cook County, the Field Museum, the Chicago Housing Authority, AIA Chicago and the Metropolitan Planning Council, with additional support from the Calumet Stormwater Collaborative and Chicago Southland Green Drinks.

Help spread the word! Share this event on social media and use the hashtag #ChiRiverDay2018.

Please register so we can ensure we send enough bags, gloves and T-shirts to each location. Registration for all Chicago River Day sites will remain open until Monday, May 7, 2018 or until the site is at capacity.
