Event description

Description

Get excited for the Ramadan event of the year! Ten cities and hundreds of athletes will embrace the spirit of the month by fasting, raising charitable funds and building community for good while taking part in our annual 5k event. This year, Fasting5k is working with organizations focused on youth civic engagement to help educate and empower our civic and political leaders of tomorrow. Now more than ever, we must capture the energy of the times and ensure our youth are ready to change the world for the better.

The Chicago team will be fundraising for the Mikva Challenge and WAGGGS. Mikva Challenge develops youth to be informed, empowered, and active citizens and community leaders. They do this by engaging youth in action civics, an authentic and transformative learning process built on youth voice and youth expertise. Mikva Challenge adheres to the following core values when implementing their mission:

+By providing high quality programming in under-resourced communities and schools, we can eliminate the civic achievement gap.

+If youth voice is included in decision-making that policy makers will make more informed decisions.

+The best way to learn democracy is to do democracy.

+Action civics is an essential tool to help young people develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to be informed, empowered, and active citizens.

+Youth are not apathetic, and that by inviting them into the political process they will become powerful and thoughtful citizens.

+Mikva Challenge always needs to be nonpartisan to allow young people to formulate their own opinions and choose the candidates and issues they want to support.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is a global movement and the largest organization for girls and young women in the world dedicated to supporting them to develop their full potential as leaders and active citizens of the world with 10 million members across 146 countries. Fasting 5k will be supporting WAGGG's Voices against Violence, a one-of-a-kind program to improve young people’s knowledge, awareness and attitudes on violence against women. This program helps young people globally develop their civic engagement skills as they take the lead themselves in changing the global conversation on violence against girls and young women. Young women act as advocates and leaders in their communities and through this international program girls, boys, adults, parents and the community alike are engaged in conversations about violence.

Don't miss out! Come meet some great people, have lots of fun and make change together! We look forward to seeing you there.

***Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $250 to benefit our fundraising partner***
