Event Details

This first Chicago RPG Circle is a chance to play a roleplaying game adventure in a workshop-style environment and a chance to talk shop, share GM and player techniques, discuss actual play with other participants, and talk in person about how we play.

This event is about demystifying the process of Game Mastering roleplaying games through shared experiences and camaraderie. Let’s play, let’s talk, let’s level up our gameplay!

In this event, multiple tables of players and GMs all play the same fantasy-RPG adventure with the same characters, then compare notes afterward to discover how the various experiences of play were similar or different.

Who is this for?

New and experienced RPG players alike are welcome!

Don’t think of yourself as a Game Master yet? No worries! Come to learn or come to share your play techniques.

This event is for roleplayers—GMs and players—who believe we can get better at gaming not only by thinking critically about how games are played and run, but also by deconstructing the experience of play as it is happening. Think of this event as the opportunity to participate in a “commentary track” of an RPG session during play.

The Chicago RPG Circle is brought to you by Gameplaywright Press and the One Shot podcast—experts in tabletop roleplaying games.

Registration

Participants must be 18-years or older. The De-Mystic Circle is a smoke-free, no-alcohol event. Players must respect event rules and codes of conduct.

Preregistration gets you a seat as a player or GM. On-site registration will only be possible if seats remain on the day of the event. All registrants are invited to participate in the postgame symposium as well.

Each registrant gets the following:

  • A PDF copy of Saturday’s adventure: “The Tower in the Sea”
  • Admission to the Saturday-afternoon workshop-style game session
  • Admission to the Saturday-evening postgame symposium
  • Access to snacks, pencils, notecards, and dice during the conference
  • An additional copy of the adventure PDF annotated after the event with select postgame notes
The Schedule

11am: Orientation and Introduction

Opening ceremonies include an orientation and a keynote introduction to the event by the organizers.

12pm–5pm: Workshop Play

GMs run the provided fantasy RPG adventure using a game like D&D5 or Dungeon World. Our exact line-up of Game Masters is still coming together.

• What is “Workshop-Style” Play?

Workshop-style play allows players to pause the game and talk shop with the rest of the table about how we play, in the moment, and how we can adjust and adapt our play styles to maximize everyone’s comfort and fun. Each player, including the GM, gets opportunities to pause the game for a quick interview, a do-over, or a “retcon.”

• “The Tower in the Sea”

This short, flexible game adventure (still in the works) gets shared with all registrants, be they players or GMs, and gives everyone a common understanding of what’s written into the adventure and what the GM is adding to it on the spot.

Tower in the Sea

5pm–6:30pm: Dinner Break

After the game, why not enjoy dinner at one of several delicious eateries in the area?

6:30pm: The Symposium

Come back for guided discussion in a symposium where the GMs and players can share notes about actual play, ask questions, applaud their cohorts, and compare techniques and outcomes from the adventure. Game writer and designer, Will Hindmarch, guides us through a discussion of the adventure map, room by room, to see what we learn.

FAQs

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

All attendees must be aged 18 years or older this time. Expect to get your hand stamped.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

The Co-Prosperity Sphere is just south of 31st Street and Morgan in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood, near the Halsted stop on the Orange L line and the 35th Street stop of the Red L line. Check CTA schedules for bus times. Street parking is available near the Co-Prosperity Sphere.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

You're welcome to bring your own dice but please leave your weapons at home.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes, please.

What is the refund policy?

If we have ample notice, we can consider refunds for registrants who end up being unable to make the event due to unforeseen occurances, but we make no guarantees.

Attendees who register and apply to be GMs will receive a refund for their ticket price if they are selected as a GM for the event.

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

Alas, no. That'll mess with our ticketing system and booking procedures. Sorry!

Customs and Code of Conduct

Questions are a key technology at this event. Before you offer advice, ask a question. Before you assume why another player is playing the way they are, ask a question. Your curiosity will get a good workout at this event, we hope, and others' curiosity should be respected and rewarded.

When you like something another player has done, let them know! Praise is vital, too.

HAVE AN EMERGENCY?

Call 911, then contact event staff.

NEED HELP?

Talk to your GM or the Host. They will be glad to help.

  • Embrace the game’s theme and tone!
  • Step away from the table if you need to use your phone or eat!
  • Don’t use “it’s what my character would do” as an excuse!
