Event description

Description

Chicago Dancemakers Forum is pleased to present Sara Zalek's Les chanteuses du rien at The Glasner Studio on November 30, 2017. This once-only house concert is in partnership with Edgar Miller Legacy.

Les chanteuses du rien will begin with a quiet start at 6 pm, followed by an active performance from 6:45 to 7:30 pm. Enjoy conversations, comments, and general sociability from 7:30 to 9 pm when refreshments will be served.

About the Performance:

This evenings house concert is designed specifically for The Glasner Studio— once a parlor for gentlemen, then an activist hub in the 60's, it now serves as the headquarters of Edgar Miller Legacy. This commissioned space is delightfully crafted by Edgar Miller, where all sorts of hidden stories and treasures delight in every detail. A trio of tricksters: Sara Zalek, Elaine Lemieux, and Hanna Brock romp in their experimental opera Les chanteuses du rien, exploring dynamics of resonance in relation to space, history, and the present moment. As you gather, these singers of nothing search for one another, using calls and responses that might create space for you to notice something extraordinary.

From Sara Zalek:

We bring forth memories of light we have seen stream in colored daylight.

We create improvised structures using genres of classical scores, experimental opera, improvised sound, expanded cinema, and Butoh dance. Ultimately, we want to surprise, disarm, and uplift the spirits of all who witness, to continue weaving the long tail of our evolutionary story.

About Edgar Miller Legacy and The Glasner Studio:

Edgar Miller Legacy is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the public appreciation of late American artist Edgar Miller, supporting the preservation of Miller’s art, design, and architecture, and encouraging the spirit of ingenuity in others through public programming, educational opportunities, published research, and collaborative, artistic activities.

The Glasner Studio (1928) is Edgar Miller’s masterpiece of art, design, and architecture, incorporating Miller’s woodwork, metalwork, mosaics, stained glass, and more. Part of a private enclave in Chicago’s Old Town, Glasner Studio is a brilliant amalgam of arts and crafts, art deco, and early modernist styles and building techniques. The fully restored home is open to guests on a limited basis in order to balance preservation with access.

About Chicago Dancemakers Forum:

Through robust interaction among dancemakers and with the public, Chicago Dancemakers Forum builds broad support and appreciation for Chicago’s diverse dance communities. The Lab Artists program makes $15,000 cash grants to choreographers annually. Grants are combined with mentorship throughout the research, development, and performance of a newly choreographed work. Sara Zalek was a Lab Artist Awardee in 2015-2016.
