July 1 | On the River with Friends of the Chicago River
Since 1979, Friends of the Chicago River has been working diligently to improve the quality of our local waterways. As the habitat becomes more welcoming for our local flora and fauna, Chicagoans also reap the benefits of a balanced and protected river ecosystem! Join us as we discuss green infrastructure, Chicago's delicate relationship with the river, and ways you can get involved this summer with Chelsey Grassfield, Policy Specialist from Friends of the Chicago River.
Registration closes one hour before the webinar starts. All webinars will be recorded and shared afterwards. Recordings of our previous webinars can be found here.
Previous Webinars:
April 22 | Vermi-Composting 101
Composting is an excellent way to turn your food scraps into soil nutrients for your plants and garden. In this webinar, we’ll share the basics of vermi-composting (using worms in your compost bin). Join Kassandra Hinrichsen from Plant Chicago as she discusses how to begin vermi-composting at home.
April 29 | Fresh Water in the Time of COVID-19
Even in a city like Chicago, one sitting on the shores of the world’s largest source of fresh water, access to drinking water is far from equitable, and far too often, it is blocked, restricted, or denied to the most vulnerable. Join Dr. Rachel Havrelock, founder and director of the UIC Freshwater Lab, as she shares how this environmental justice issue has been impacting Chicago residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
May 6 | Community Solar with CUB
Thanks to the Future Energy Jobs Act, it's a great time to go solar in Illinois. If you can't install solar panels on your building, you can sign up for a community solar subscription. Join Cate York from CUB to learn more about this new program, and what to look out for in a contract.
May 13 | Community and Citizen Science at Home
As we are all trying our best to adhere to social distancing practices, how can we remain connected and actively engaged with the nature and science right outside (and inside) our doors? Community and Citizen Science has always been a way that people can contribute to and engage in important scientific research on a local, national, and global level. Now more than ever we can use Community and Citizen Science projects to connect our observations to a broader context and strengthen our connection to the scientific community and each other. Join the Nature Museum’s own Manager of Teen and Young Adult Programs, Dave Bild, as he shares how you can engage in community and citizen science projects from home.
June 3 at 2pm | Radical Reuse with Community Glue Workshop
Repair, don't replace! Fixing what you've already got is surprisingly counter-cultural amid America’s obsession with consumerism. Join Community Glue Workshop's co-founder, Carla Bruni, for a short webinar discussing how even a broken worldview can be fixed (and it starts with a few curious humans and a malfunctioning toaster).
