Donna Marie Miller, discussing her book The Broken Spoke: Austin's Legendary Honky-Tonk. With special guest James White, owner of The Broken Spoke.
Published April 2017 by Texas A&M University Press.

Author Donna Marie will be accompanied at the event by Broken Spoke's proprietor, James White. Mr. White tells fascinating true stories about booking celebrities such as Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, Willie Nelson, George Strait, and Dolly Parton at the Broken Spoke. They will also be accomanied by Musician Ben Stafford Rodgers who will perform a few songs. Ben is a wonderful singer of classic country songs by Gene Autry and Jimmie Rodgers. Mr. White usually opens and closes the reading by joining Ben in song.

DONNA MARIE MILLER is a freelance writer, photographer, and videographer living in Austin. Her work has appeared in the Alternate Root, Americana Rhythm, Austin Food, Austin Fusion, Austin Monthly, Creative Screenwriting, Elmore, Fiddler, and Texas Highways magazines.

JAMES AND ANNETTA WHITE opened the Broken Spoke in 1964, then a mile south of the Austin city limits, under a massive live oak, and beside what would eventually become South Lamar Boulevard. White built the place himself, beginning construction on the day he received his honorable discharge from the US Army. For more than fifty years, the Broken Spoke has served up, in the words of White’s well-worn opening speech, “. . . cold beer, good whiskey, the best chicken fried steak in town . . . and good country music.” Famous performers have graced the Broken Spoke stage beginning with Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, Willie Nelson, Kitty Wells, Dolly Parton, Marcia Ball, Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel, Gary P. Nunn, Jerry Jeff Walker and Alvin Crow. Most recently Garth Brooks visited the Broken Spoke during SXSW and performed a 45-minute set solo on stage with just his guitar. You never know who might show up to play at the Broken Spoke.

BEN STAFFORD RODGERS is an around cowboy singer/actor. He has been roping and performing all over the American Southwest for the last several years, in both the music and film business. He plays guitar and sings some classic country songs made popular by the singing cowboys of the 1960s.
