Description

Photographer Erica Wilkins hosts a discussion of how her And Feminist portrait collection, exhibiting at the Cherry On Top Pop-Up Shop, uses art and empathy to neutralize difficult conversations on equality, educate, and encourage unexpected, willing not-yet-allies by removing the stigma and pressure on discriminated victim voices. And how building this body of work and leaning on her art and experience has helped her heal and gain a wider base of support for rape victims, like herself. Talk to be followed by guided viewing of the And Feminist collection.

About the Work
And Feminist is a photography-based social campaign built of environmental portraits that each subject feels represent their daily lives. Portraits are titled using two self-descriptors subjects chose to attach to their “and feminist” label to illustrate that in addition to believing in equality, they are intricate people with diverse lives and experiences. These descriptors are then made into hashtags for the instagram social campaign with the hopes that they will find untapped, willing allies, and expand the understanding of the word. By showcasing diversity, these portraits humanize the label “feminist” non-confrontationally to further inclusive conversations. The project can be found on instagram @andfeminist and has been featured in three Austin galleries, partnering with non-profits such as Deeds Not Words, Boss Babes, and Design Week. The Cherry Cult is proud to host a pop-up gallery featuring this work during its pop-up shop event.

Erica Wilkins is a photographer, rape survivor, and feminist working in Austin, TX, passionate about creating a wider support for victims of abuse by reframing social responsibility and response, and building empathy to prevent future victims.
