Workshop for Advisors, Mentors, and Training Program Staff

Individual Development Plan Assisted Mentoring

This 1.5-hour interactive workshop will introduce the IDP process as a mentoring tool and share related resources available to advisors. The IDP process consists of four components: 1) self-assessment, 2) career exploration, 3) skill strengthening, and 4) goal setting. ChemIDPTM, the IDP tool and workshop developed by the ACS for trainees in the chemical sciences, will serve as an example of how use of IDPs has the potential to prepare faculty/mentors and trainees for efficient mentor-mentee discussions.

Adequate preparation of the future workforce is essential for the survival of the U.S. as an economic and innovative powerhouse in the world. Numerous reports from organizations such as the National Academy of Sciences, the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) have highlighted the importance of mentoring for the successful navigation through college, graduate school, or postdoctoral training and towards securing satisfying jobs. Federal funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation strongly recommend the use of Individual Development Plans (IDPs) and postdoctoral mentoring plans for trainees, respectively. The workshop will be applicable to those working across STEM fields, although specific examples will be drawn from the chemical sciences.

The workshop will be followed by lunch.

Career Pathways: Planning for your career

Workshop participants will engage in self-assessment activities to identify values, strengths, and potential career options, understand the components of an individual development plan (ChemIDP.org), assess and develop concrete steps to take towards their career goal and learn strategies to hone their networking skills to enhance their job search. The day will conclude with a networking reception with light refreshments.

The workshop will be applicable to those working across STEM fields, although specific examples will be drawn from the chemical sciences.

Participants are welcome to arrive any time after 11:30 for lunch; the workshop begins at 1 PM. The session ends at 5 PM, concluding with a networking reception.

Registration fee includes all materials, lunch, and reception.

This event is co-sponsored by the Northeastern Section's Younger Chemists Committee (NSYCC), Northeastern University, and Research Corporation for Science Advancement.
