Description

Chelping @ The Leeds Library, Wednesday 9th May

After an incredibly successful launch event starring Joelle Taylor, 'Chelping' returns to Leeds Library with another star-studded line-up in one of the UK's most unique and atmospheric venues. We strongly advise that you purchase tickets in advance online. This event is presented as part of The Leeds Library's 250th Anniversary celebrations.

Theresa Lola (headline)

Theresa Lola is a British Nigerian Poet. She was shortlisted for the 2017 Bridport Poetry Prize and won the 2017 Hammer and Tongue National Slam. She is an alumni of the Barbican Young Poets programme and a part of Octavia Women of Color collective led by Rachel Long.

Matt Nicholson (support)

Matt Nicholson is a poet from East Yorkshire…from where the culture from in these crazy, mixed up times. His two collections to date, 'There and back to see how far it is' and 'We are not all blessed with a hat-shaped head' (out in March 2018), and his stage performances, bristle with poems that are sometimes dark and intense, sometimes lyrical and tender, but always painstakingly honest. His is a rare, unapologetic voice.

Geneviève L. Walsh (host)

Geneviève L. Walsh is a Yorkshire-raised Londoner and writer of poetry. She’s taken her work about alienation, inebriation and pop music to every kind of stage from tiny backstreet pubs to major festivals since her stage debut in 2012. Fresh from co-starring at April's launch event alongside Joelle Taylor, she returns to provide hosting duties as we welcome Theresa Lola to Leeds.

Walsh hosts and coordinates Spoken Weird, the event she founded in 2013, which currently stands as Halifax’s longest-running, loudest and most eclectic poetry night. She was the first female core member of A Firm of Poets, and her début solo collection, The Dance of a Thousand Losers [Flapjack Press], was released in March 2017, and immediately taken on a countrywide tour of thirty-two venues. The collection has been described by Henry Normal as ‘keen and urgent with an untamed beauty - like a puma caught under a streetlight’.

Open Mic

The 5 open mic slots are expected to be filled very quickly, and are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please email Matt on eyup@mattabbottpoet.com to reserve yours.
