The story of Edna Rhoda:

Silhoutte of Edna Rhoda with her story on a yellow background

Doctors had said, "Edna, just put her in an institution."

A daughter born with Down syndrome, Edna Rhoda wanted her child to live a full and meaningful life. Born in the ‘50s, during a time when people with disabilities were living out their lives in segregated institutions, Edna said no.

Actually, she said, “over my dead body,” but who’s checking?

Ahead of her time, Edna wanted the best for her daughter Sandra. She wanted her to live with her family, and in the midst of her community. She wanted her to get an education. She wanted her to have a job. She wanted her to fall in love.

Edna knew, Sandra had gifts and strengths. Just like everybody else.

And instead of sending her daughter to live her life in an institution, Edna watched Sandra grow. Sandra earned her education. Sandra worked for public health and had friends. Sandra was a part of her community, right here in Waterloo Region.

Sandra thrived.

On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we celebrate people like Edna Rhoda.

People who challenge the norm. People who look past disability and see gifts and strengths. People who want inclusion.

5% of all Edna Rhoda Golden Chai Ale will be donated to Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region, to help build a community where everyone belongs.

Pints and cans will be available for sale as of December 3rd.

Gift wrapping of six-packs will also be available with a donation to EAFWR.
