Event description

Description

The 2019 AIA Wisconsin Conference on Architecture will feature the CHEEP DIGS Birdhouse Design Competition. The competition is open to any AIA or IIDA member. There is no limit on the number of entries, which can be submitted individually, as part of a team, or representing a firm. All entries as well as time and materials to construct, are to be considered donations and will be part of a silent auction held during the Conference.

The goal of the competition is to challenge the imagination of our members to design and craft an original birdhouse that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The proceeds from the silent auction will help support The Wisconsin Architects Foundation with a primary mission to enhance the public's awareness of architecture through a commitment to architectural education.

Submittal Requirements:

  • Plans: PDF suitable for print on 8 ½” x 11”
may include assembly instructions and sketch/elevations
  • Material list
  • Constructed Birdhouse

Design & Construction Guidelines

There are many resources you may find on-line to help guild you in the Do’s and Don’ts along with the appropriate functional requirements for bird house construction including: suggested dimensions and allowable entrance-holes sizes for a variety of bird species, ventilation, drainage, material usage, coatings, mountings, etc.

  • Size Limitations: Submitted birdhouses shall not be larger than 18 inches x 18 inches x 18 inches
  • Materials: There are no limitations on the types of materials that can be used, however the birdhouse should be constructed ins such a manner that it is ready for installation and use outdoors.
  • It is highly recommended that eco-friendly, non-toxic, recycled and sustainable products be implemented
  • Solid wood products such as cedar and pine provide great insulation
  • The preferred thickness of building material is ¾” to lessen the potential heat build-up within the birdhouse which can cause harm to young birds
  • Perches are for predators. Please omit from the design.
  • It is recommended that the sides of the birdhouse enclose the floor to slow deterioration of the floor.
  • It is recommended that at least four 3/8”-diameter drain holes be placed in the floor
  • It is recommended that fasteners be galvanized, concrete-coated, or ring-shank nails
  • The birdhouse should have an easily removable section for cleaning purposes
  • Each birdhouse must be able to either be placed flat on a table or be provided with a sturdy hook to be hung for display at the exhibit.
