Description

Check Yourself: Hidden Bias, Stereotypes, and Microaggressions

Presented by the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement

Led by Danielle Sims, this session will focus on helping higher education professionals view our Jefferson students more clearly by challenging common stereotypes, checking our hidden biases, and addressing microaggressions. As professionals, it is our responsibility to “check ourselves” to ensure that our upbringing, individual experiences, and portrayals of certain populations in the media don’t hinder us from creating authentic relationships with students. This interactive session will help higher education professionals become more familiar with the Jefferson student demographic, identify and deflate stereotypes, address incidents of bias and microaggressions, and promote the idea that every college student should be able to have an experience that is free of discrimination, marginalization, and any other violation.

Participants are asked to complete the Implicit Bias Race or Gender Test at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html

Please print your results and bring them to sessions. Sharing results in not mandatory during the session and participants will only be asked to share at their comfort level.

For questions, concerns, and ADA accommodations please email Danielle Sims at Danielle.sims@kctcs.edu
