a film by John Scheinfeld
What's on your Coltrane playlist?
Set against the social, political and cultural landscape of the times, Chasing Trane brings saxophone great John Coltrane to life, as a man and an artist.
Film and conversation with Guest Speakers:
MIYUKI WILLIAMS, host of "A Sunday Kind of Love" on WPFW FM
Artist and Illustrator RUDY GUTIERREZ (artwork featured in CHASING TRANE)
Miyuki has been a producer/dj on WPFW FM for over 36 years where she hosts “A Sunday Kind of Love”.
Rudy Gutierrez's paintings from the picture book Spirit Seeker- John Coltrane's Musical Journey (written by Gary Golio and published by Clarion) appear in CHASING TRANE and his painting "A Love Supreme" is being used for the film poster as well as the upcoming DVD. Gutierrez designed the Jimi Hendrix Forever stamp issued by the USPS in 2014. He's designed CD covers for numerous record labels including Sony, Verve, and Arista Records. Guitierrez is a graduate and now teaches at the Pratt Institute in New York.
Chasing Trane features never-before-seen Coltrane family home movies, footage of Coltrane and his band in the studio (discovered in a California garage during production of this film), along with hundreds of never-before-seen photographs and rare television appearances from around the world. Coltrane’s incredible story is told by the musicians who worked with him (Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Reggie Workman), musicians inspired by his fearless artistry and creative vision (Common, John Densmore, Wynton Marsalis, Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter, Kamasi Washington), Coltrane’s children and biographers, and well-known admirers such as President Bill Clinton and Dr. Cornel West.
This event is a preview for the broadcast of Chasing Trane on the Emmy Award winning PBS series "Independent Lens" November 30 at 8PM on WHUT TV.
