About this Event

A B O U T

In the first decade of the 14th century, Pope Clement V, former Archbishop of Bordeaux, relocated the papacy to the town of Avignon kicking off a little spat in history known as the Babylonian Captivity of the Papacy. The Pope, enthroned in the fortified town of Avignon in the southern Rhône lay claim to the legitimacy of his slice of Christendom while the “Anti-Popes” in Rome sought to re-unite the faith and re-establish the Papacy to its rightful place in Rome.

Clement V and subsequent "Avignon Popes" were said to be great lovers of Burgundy wines and did much to promote them during the 70-year Avignon Papacy. At the time, wine-growing around the town of Avignon was anything but illustrious but when you got Popes drinking th wine-- well, let’s say they demanded something with a little more cache- and so Chateauneuf-du-Paper (lit. New Castle of the Pope) was born.

The pebbled vineyard areas around Avignon were planted to a host of varieties acclimated to the Rhone’s more Mediterranean climate, namely Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre. The rest, as they say, is history.

While the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape have garnered global renown as some of the most heady and delectable wines in France - often fetching similar prices as the more aristocratic wines of Burgundy or Bordeaux, the region still keeps some of its papal mysticism.

Its wines, not shy, can be made of up to thirteen allowed varietals, although most stick with a few - and in Chateauneuf’s pebbled and limestone rich soils and unique terroir they produce highly aromatic and hedonistically corpulent wines with which can age for decades.

The wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape are legendary and in this seminar we will explore the origins of Chateauneuf, it’s various soils and sub-regions, and taste a few of the regions top estates.
